PROVERB

            Proverb is a short saying that is widely used to express an obvious truth or familiar experience. A proverb may have an allegorical message behind its odd appearance. The reason of popularity is due to its usage in spoken language as well as in the folk literature. Some authors twist and bend proverbs and create anti-proverbs to add literary effects.

Proverbs are often borrowed from similar languages and cultures, and sometimes come down to the present through more than one language. A proverb is such a saying popularly known and repeated, usually expressing simply and concretely, though often metaphorically, a truth based on common sense or the practical experience. Proverb adalah sebuah kalimat sederhana yang mengandung makna dan bertujuan mendidik, di Indonesia sendiri proverb merupakan peribahasa yang biasa digunakan dalam sehari-hari.  Here are some examples:

·         April flowers bring May flowers

(something bad today may bring good things in future)

(kebukuran yang terjadi sekarang, membawa kebaikan di masa depan)

·         Ashamed to ask astray on the street

(people are ashamed to ask more intelligent people will lose)

(seseorang yang malu bertanya sekarang, akan tersesat di kemudian)

·         All good things come to those who wait

(if you are patient, there will be reward)

(jika kamu bersabar, akan ada hadiah untuk mu)

·         Another name of hardwork is miracle

(the miracle never happen if we don’t hardwork)

(keajaiban tidak  pernah datang jika kita tidak bekerja keras)

·         Distance from failure to success is never longer than the bridge of hope

(Never give up)

(jangan pernah menyerah)

·         Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

(Have a backup plain! Don’t risk all of your money or time in one plan)

(buatlah rencana cadangan, jangan memfokuskan pada sebuah rencana saja)

·         Familiarity breeds contempt

(When you are around someone for too long you get tired and annoyed by them)

(terlalu lama didekat seseorang menimpulkan rasa lelah dan muak)
